Rebecca, 24, is now a second language Welsh teacher at the Bishop of Llandaff High School in Cardiff.

The aim of the competition is to recognise someone who has wholly committed to learning Welsh, with the medal awarded to the individual who has best shown how they use the language day to day in school or the workplace and socially.

Originally from Pencoed, Rebecca was educated at English stream schools, studying Welsh as a second language until the sixth form. Inspired by her Welsh teachers, Rebecca decided to study for a BA degree in Welsh at Swansea University.

As a student, Rebecca followed Welsh proficiency evening classes to improve her mastery of the language. In 2016, Rebecca graduated with a first class degree in Welsh from Swansea University.

After winning the Learner’s Medal, Rebecca Morgan said:

“It is an honour to win the Learners’ Medal at this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod. From a young age, I have enjoyed learning Welsh, and now, after years of learning, I am delighted that I can share my love for the language with the students I teach every day. I would like to thank every teacher and lecturer that has inspired me, and to all my friends and family for their continued support. The message to everyone is; if I can do it, so can you!”

Dr Rhian Jones, head of Swansea University’s Department of Welsh said:

“We as staff and students are delighted that Rebecca has won this year’s Welsh Learner’s Medal, and take pride in her success. It is fantastic that the Urdd holds a competition celebrating the achievements of young learners.

“Rebecca spent three years with us at Swansea’s Department of Welsh, and after her first year of following a second language course in Welsh, she was completely fluent. It is no surprise to us at all as a Department that she has had such success at this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod, and we look forward to celebrating with her!”
