The college, which launched the Centre for Global Burn Injury Policy and Research (CGBIPR) last year, will be hosting a workshop to develop the Interburns Advanced Burn Care Module on Surgery from Monday, April 30 to Friday, May 4.

The workshop will see clinicians from low and middle-income countries invited to the University to help develop the training programme and share ideas with one another.

Among those in attendance will be Dr Habib Rahman, one of Afghanistan’s few paediatric burns surgeons, from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health in Kabul and Dr Richard Nnabuko, one of Nigeria’s leading consultant plastic surgeons in burns, and previous president of the Pan African Burns Society.

This follows on from the college’s work with the international NGO Interburns that developed a training programme for basic burn care in Ethiopia last month.

Professor Tom Potokar OBE said:

“We are privileged to host our international colleagues in Swansea, and look forward to developing a surgery training programme specifically for burns in low income environments.

“It is extremely difficult to find surgeons willing to work in the field of burns and by offering training in this area, we will support Ministries of Health across the world to support clinicians to develop skills in this highly under-resourced area. This is the first step towards making this change.”

The workshop is funded by the Department for International Development (DfiD) and the Centre for Global Burn Injury Policy and Research is supported by the National Institute of Healthcare Research (NIHR).
