On March 8^th, from 2.00 – 3.00 pm in the Fulton House refectory, there will be:

• A bake sale to raise money for Welsh Women’s Aid which works to end domestic violence against women and girls in Wales, and Project My Girl which supports girls in Malawi to access education.  
• A photo shoot with the official International Women’s Day banner, with people of all genders, all ethnicities, disabled people, people of faith, and people from diverse backgrounds being invited to join in and wear purple, the International Women’s Day official colour.
• A sing along with the chorus of the UN song One Woman.

Additionally, throughout the week the University will be showcasing 12 successful and inspiring women that work, study and support the institution. This year’s theme of ‘lift as you climb' will focus on how these inspiring women have used their success to help others achieve, or to affect positive change.

The University has also planned a series of International Women’s Day celebrations to be held throughout the month of March, which began on March 6^th with a talk by Professor Laura Serrant, Professor of Nursing, Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, Centre for Health and Social Care Research at Sheffield Hallam University.  

In a talk titled ‘Lift as you climb’: On womanhood, diversity and leadership, Professor Serrant discussed her career journey. As one of the few black Professors of Nursing in the UK, Professor Serrant shone a light on representing nurses and minority communities, and how she has striven to empower others.

Following on from Professor Serrant’s talk, there will also be the following events:

International Women’s Day 2018: Professor Sara Mole, UCL Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Pat Price, Director of PSPU

As part of the Athena Swan Seminar Series, Professor Sara Mole, UCL Professor of Molecular Cell Biology, will be discussing her research strategy, past and present. Through her role as UCL’s Provost’s Envoy for Gender Equality, Professor Mole will also reflect on gender related challenges in STEMM, highlighting her Department’s recent Athena SWAN Gold award.

Pat Price, Director of Swansea University's Planning and Strategic Projects Unit, will also be speaking at this event about her career journey.

International Women's Day 2018: "Reel Women"

Date/Time: March 7th (2:30pm-5pm)

Location: The Atrium, School of Management building, Bay Campus

The School of Management and College of Engineering invite all staff and students to an informal networking event which takes inspiration from films featuring women as diverse as the climber Gwen Moffatt, and the activist Erin Brockovich.

The event will show a variety of short films and clips to encourage a debate on how we can #pressforprogress and, literally in Gwen’s case, #liftasweclimb at the Bay Campus. 

ITWales International Women's Day Dinner - Celebrating Women in Welsh IT

Date/Time: March 8th (5pm-9pm)

Location: Marriott Hotel, Swansea.

This event will provide an insight into the diverse range of business and career opportunities for women in the 21st Century, whilst offering a platform for sharing experiences, knowledge and best practice for women, particularly those working within science and technology.

This year's theme, "Inspiring the Next Generation”, is sponsored by Technocamps at Swansea University.

International Women's Day 2018: Professor Kirsti Bohata on Women's Suffrage and Literature in Wales

The Department of English Literature and Creative Writing will be hosting an event on behalf of the College of Arts and Humanities, speaking on women's suffrage and literature in Wales.

International Women's Day 2018: Richness in Diversity @ College of Science

Date/Time: March 15th (1pm-2pm)

Location: Wallace Building, Park Campus

This networking event will feature speakers on the topic of work-life balance and wellbeing, along with positive discrimination vs positive action.

P‌rofessor Hilary Lappin-Scott, Swansea University’s Senior Pro-Vice Chancellor, has dedicated much of her career to ensuring girls and women have access to science and engineering. As both a prominent academic and woman within the STEM field, this International Women’s Day Professor Lappin-Scott is being featured by the Federation of European Microbiological Society FEMS–of which she is the current Vice President.

Speaking on the day, Professor Lappin-Scott, said: “International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us to unite and feel part of the community of women across the world. It’s a day when we recognise and celebrate the contributions of women to all aspects of life, reflect and give thanks for the generations of amazing women who have helped make this day possible, and the generations of phenomenal women still to come.”
