University to host 150 ft fancy dress charity abseil

Organisers at Swansea University’s student volunteering organisation, Discovery, are appealing for volunteers to take part in a 150 ft charity abseil from the top of Kilvey Halls at the Singleton Campus with the fancy dress theme of ‘When I grow up I want to be …”.

Abseil posterThe event, to be held on 17th-18th June, will be part of Discovery’s 50th anniversary celebrations and will raise money for education programmes run by two charities founded at the University, SOS Africa and Swansea-Siavonga Partnership.

Organisers are hoping to recruit 300 abseilers and volunteers can register by emailing info@sosafrica.com or calling 01749 344197 and placing a £15 deposit.  Individual entrants should raise a minimum of £50 and teams of six should raise a minimum of £300 and all entrants will have the opportunity to win two flight tickets to a charity project in Africa.

Christine Watson M.B.E., Manager of the Discovery programme said: “We are delighted and proud to be working with SOS Africa again on such an exciting project, in a high profile year for Discovery celebrating its achievements of 50 years  as a registered charity at Swansea University .  Raising funds for our projects in Africa is always a priority for us and we are very proud to be hosting this event with support from the University.  Both returning and current volunteers, staff and general public will have the opportunity to abseil the Kilvey Halls and also join in with the many other celebrations of the 50th weekend.   It’s a great event at a great time for us!

Founder of SOS Africa Dr Matt Crowcombe who is also a Swansea University alumnus, said: “"SOS Africa is a grass roots charity founded in 2003 by a group of Swansea University students looking to make a lasting difference to the lives of those less fortunate. Thirteen years on we are delighted to be able to host this exciting event in partnership with Swansea-Siavonga and Discovery from the 150ft Kilvey Building and welcome staff and students, past and present and the local community to participate and continue this legacy."

The Swansea Siavonga Partnership, established in 2008 aims to build relationships across different cultures and maximise income generation through sharing experiences and learning, supporting children through education and making the best use of the environment to improve health through nutrition.

The SOS Africa Children’s Charity is a small UK based child sponsorship organisation which invests in the education and care of African children to help them  reach their full potential.
