Latest figures from UCAS show that applications to Swansea University for entry in September 2013 have increased by 18.2% at a time when there are concerns about falling applications nationally.
With increases in 13 out of 15 subject groups, the scale of the rise includes a 15% increase in Languages, a 20% increase in History and a 64% increase in Maths and Computer Science and Engineering.
Professor Alan Speight, Pro Vice Chancellor for Student Experience said: “These figures are excellent news for Swansea as it shows that students are recognising a University which is on the way up. The increase in applications are a vindication of the massive investment which is being put into the campus expansion and recognition of the support we have from the Welsh Government. By 2015 the University will have a new Science and Innovation Campus to complement an upgraded Singleton Park Campus.
“Overall student satisfaction has been steadily increasing and last year we achieved a score of 87%, higher than the Wales and UK average, with 89% of students saying they would recommend the University as a place of study. With over 90% of our students already in further education or employment within 6 months of graduating, Swansea University will give its students even more of a head start with its newly established Employability Academy, launched in 2012.
“These records speak for themself and show that we are a forward thinking and progressive University. With the University also being recognised for its excellence by the QS stars global university ratings system with 4 stars overall (and 5 stars for its Teaching) we are confident of achieving our ambition that Swansea will be established as a research-intensive top-30 UK University by 2017, ahead of our centenary in 2020.”
- Final figures for 2013/2014 applications submitted for the main 15 January UCAS deadline will be released by UCAS on 30th January 2013.
