Hosted by the University’s Welfare@CampusLife team, Year 10 pupils at Bishop Gore Comprehensive School in Sketty got the chance to try the Skills for Life programme offered to students.

Pupils took part in first aid, self-defence and money management sessions as well as having a tour of the Singleton campus led by student ambassadors.

The event was part of futures week dedicated to extra-curricular activities to enhance pupils’ learning experience outside of the classroom.

Assistant Head teacher Steven Wilson said:

“We were looking for two things - to encourage our pupils’ University aspirations and inspire them to take the next step in their learning and to learn life skills. It is great for our pupils to be able to get out of our normal school environment and experience something not taught by their teachers.”

Welfare@CampusLife Student Life Officer Stuart Gray said:

“We are extremely pleased to have the pupils here. The Skills for Life programme aims to teach practical life skills to improve resilience, confidence and self-esteem. We hope the day not only taught them fundamental life skills such as first aid and money management but also showed what Swansea University has to offer.”

Bishop Gore maths teacher Laura Menagh added: “It’s great for the pupils to do something practical. Possessing a variety of life skills is just as important as subjects you learn at school.”
