University to host 100 ft. charity abseil from the Bay Campus Clock Tower Building

Local charities SOS Africa and the Swansea Siavonga Partnership which is part of Discovery, Student Volunteering Services are appealing for volunteers to take part in a 100ft charity abseil of the clock tower building on Swansea University’s Bay Campus to raise funds for the education and care of disadvantaged South African and Zambian children.

Date: 12 – 13 May

Time: 9 am - 5 pm

Organisers ask that each team raise £300 or £100 per individual. As this is the first event of its kind organised for the Bay Campus, organisers recommend that participants register as soon as possible. Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. Registration deadline is May 1 2018.

‌Eleanor Norton, Managing Director of the Discovery Programme, said: “We are delighted to be once again working with SOS Africa to raise funds for projects for the care and education of children in South Africa and Zambia who live in extreme poverty. Returning, and current volunteers along with university staff and students are welcome to take part in the event which promises to be a great day!”

 

Founder of SOS Africa Dr Matt Crowcombe a former alumnus at Swansea University said: “We are once again thrilled to be teaming up with Discovery to host another fantastic fundraising event to help those less fortunate living in townships in South Africa and Zambia. Our previous abseils from Swansea Civic Centre and Kilvey Halls of Residence raised an incredible £22,000 equating to 92 years of school tuition for the children we support.

This year’s 100ft abseil from the iconic Bay Campus Clock Tower Building will enable us to further increase the number of underprivileged children we are able to empower through education.”

The Swansea Siavonga Partnership, established in 2008 by Discovery Student Volunteers in Swansea and the Siavonga Nutrition group in Zambia aims to build relationships across different cultures and maximise income generation through sharing experiences and learning, supporting children through education and making the best use of the environment to improve health through nutrition.

SOS Africa is a UK based child sponsorship organisation which invests in the education and care of South African children. Since 2003 they have provided 105 disadvantaged children, from grades 1 to 12, with a personal education programme tailored specifically to their needs. This holistic approach enables children to break the cycle of poverty and reach their full potential.
