Students, staff and Muslims from the wider community will take part in prayers for Eid Ul Adha at Fulton House from 7.30 am.

Eid is celebrated with a distribution of food to the needy, the giving of gifts to youngsters and social gatherings.

Swansea University Mosque has raised about £1,000 in the last couple of weeks for intensive care cots for the Special Care Baby Unit at war-affected Yemen which will be handed over to the Founder of Sameera Foundation Chair, Professor Rashid Malik and Dr Radwan Abdullah, Family Consultant in Singleton Hospital, who is originally from Yeman migrated to Swansea in 90’s during the celebrations.

About 20 people from Swansea are among the three million Muslims who have this year gone on the Hajj pilgrimage to follow in the footsteps of the Prophet Abraham.

Eid Ul Adha commemorates the Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son to God, who then spared him. This Old Testament event is also important in Christianity and Judaism.

The congregation will be led in prayer by Swansea University Alumnus Asim Hafiz, Director HM Home Office HQ London.

Registrar and Chief Operating Officer of Swansea University, Andrew Rhodes will address the gathering, who will be welcomed by .the chairman of the Mosque Management Committee and Dr Farooq Shah Chair of WICAS and other members of Congregation.

The prayers, or Salah, will start at 7.55am after which refreshments will be served in University Mosque in Singleton Campus.

Mr Rhodes said: “I’m looking forward to welcoming our staff, students and the wider community to celebrate Eid at our wonderful campus Mosque.  The Mosque is an important and integral part of life for most Muslim students at Swansea University and is a wonderful environment for them to worship, study, support and socialise, where they can mix with and befriend people from all over the world.”

Swansea University Muslim community and the Students’ Union Islamic Society extend an open invitation to the event.
