Pint of Science is the world’s largest festival of public science talks and will see over 25 scientists take to the stage in pubs across Swansea.

As part of the three-day Pint of Science festival, thousands of scientists around the world will speak about their research. In nearly 300 cities across 21 countries, members of the public will have the chance to ask them questions. The festival brings a unique line up of talks, demonstrations and live experiments to the nation’s favourite locals.

Swansea University researchers will talk about a variety of topics at pubs across the city, at No Sign Bar (The Vault), Brewstone & Copper. Tickets are available from the Pint of Science website with each evening costing just £4. Attendees in Swansea will enjoy a variety of exciting talks including:

• ‘Can you build a computer out of crabs?’ Dr James Stovold will introduce the world of natural computing, where researchers are building computers out of anything and everything!

• ‘PLACENTA!’ Maternal health can affect placental activity however, as Prof. Cathy Thornton will explain, the placenta can also affect the mother’s health and wellbeing

• ‘In your face!’ Should we judge a book by its cover? Dr Alex Jones will explore how our faces give away more about us than we may be aware of.
  
  

Alongside the main talks, each evening will also include a range of science-inspired activities including live experiments, quizzes, engaging stories, panel discussions, and workshops.

Swansea University coordinator Dr Sophia Kominou said: “We are very excited to bring the first Pint of Science in Swansea this year! It's a fantastic way of showcasing fascinating research being done at Swansea University. It gives the public an opportunity to discuss the research with the experts and ask any questions they might have” says Swansea coordinator Dr Sophia Komninou. “The fact that it's in a pub means it will be very informal and relaxed - I'm very much looking forward to it.”

Pint of Science was established six years ago by a group of UK-based postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers and has grown into one of the world’s biggest science festivals. The founders, Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin, have brought a personal touch to science, giving everyone the chance to meet the people behind the incredible research taking place across the globe.

"There is so much fascinating research happening right under our noses that we don't know about” says festival co-founder Dr Paul. “Some can get lost in translation leading to fake news. Pint of Science allows people direct access to inspiring scientists and encourages open discussion, all in the most familiar of British places, the pub! Scientists drink pints too - they really aren't that different!"
