The new halls of residence will support the active and growing community of Welsh speaking students at Swansea University and enhance on Welsh halls of residence already in place. The halls will be ready from September 2018.

With thousands of Welsh speakers already enrolled at the University and those numbers rising as a result of more provisions for students to study through Welsh, students will now be able to feel part of a close community with other Welsh speakers in the heart of campus life.

The new halls of residents will give new students the chance to take full of the social activities through the medium of Welsh. Students on both campuses will have access to all essential amenities including a bank, laundrette, shops, post office, food hall, health centre, the Students’ Union and Swansea’s branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

Tomos Watson, Welsh Language Officer at the Students’ Union, said:“From experience, living in accommodation specifically for Welsh speakers has facilitated the process of getting to know everyone; it’s great to be able to speak Welsh without worrying about leaving anyone out. In no time everyone got on well with each other and had something in common. It makes it easier for you to be a part of the University’s Welsh language community and activities. For me, living in accommodation for Welsh speakers has ensured that I make friends easily and get to know the University and the city.”

Professor Iwan Davies,Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Swansea University, said: “Swansea University is extremely pleased to be able to offer this development for the benefit of Welsh medium students. It will be great to see our large community of Welsh speaker and learners receive further support as a result of further Welsh medium accommodation which will lead to their activities and voice being made more obvious as a result of this.”
