The group’s role is to lead an independent review of the gender equality charter and is made up of representatives from a range of geographies, institutions and professional backgrounds. 

It will consult with the higher education sector and organisations that support and contribute to the work of the Charter.

The Athena SWAN Charter is Advance HE’s accreditation scheme recognising the work of higher education institutions and research institutes in addressing gender equality within academia and research.

Swansea University is committed to promoting gender equality, and has been a proud member of the Charter since 2008.

Senior Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott OBE said:

“I’m delighted to have been appointed to the steering group for the review of Advance HE’s Athena SWAN Charter.

“As an advocate of gender equality, I’m aware of the fine work that the Charter has done since it was established in 2005 and this review will ensure that it progresses even further in what is a rapidly changing landscape.

“I also understand the role that Swansea University – as an academic institution - has in closing the gender divide and I hope that this continues for many years to come.”

Professor Julia Buckingham CBE, who chairs the steering group said:

“Athena SWAN is something that we are very passionate about and we believe this review will provide an opportunity to consider its scope, which has evolved considerably in recent years, and ensure that it is fit for purpose in the rapidly changing landscape in which we are all operating.

“There has already been a positive response from the sector with offers from colleagues to contribute to the review. The Steering Group is very grateful for this and aims to draw on that expertise to advise on the consultation, policy and implementation as the project progresses. 

“The review will take approximately one year and we plan to write a series of blogs telling the story of the review and involving sectors colleagues along the way.”
