University launches Swansea Science Festival programme

Swansea University is to showcase its inspiring and diverse research as it launches a brand new, free, science festival, the largest event of its kind in Wales.

Swansea Science Festival The festival will be on 8th-10th September and is in partnership with the National Waterfront Museum.

A full programme of events has been launched revealing diverse topics such as dinosaurs, levitation, Star Wars, maggots and particle physics in sport, are amongst the highlights in store for visitors.

It will kick off on Friday 8th September with a programme of interactive talks and workshops for adults at the National Waterfront Museum, where visitors will be invited to explore cyber-terrorism, draw their dreams and help create the face of Swansea and culminate in a cabaret night of fun, laughs and science.  

The family programme will also begin on Friday evening with the Flying Atoms dance performance by Powys Dance at the Taliesin Arts Centre. Then the action will shift to the National Waterfront Museum and Swansea Museum in the heart of the Maritime Quarter for a weekend of family fun.

There will be a feast of entertaining hands-on experiences and the chance to discover science through theatrical presentations, music, and demonstrations.  Young visitors and their families will get the chance to make some goo, learn about powders, particles and popcorn and have fun at the chemistry carnival.

CBeebies presenter Lizzie Daly will be talking about what it’s like to be an animal and evolutionary biologist and BBC presenter Ben Garrod will be exploring the world of dinosaurs.

 

Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott said: “We were so proud to host the enormously successful British Science Festival last year, which marked the start of a science festival legacy for the city.  The experience was so positive that we can’t wait to get out to our communities and inspire the next generation of scientists.”

“We are also delighted by the support we have received by the Welsh Government Minister for Skills and Science, Julie James and we will be welcoming her to the many attractions when she visits the festival in September.”
