The annual FameLab competition invites scientists, mathematicians and engineers from around the world to convey in just three minutes, a scientific concept of their choice.

Welsh winner Carol, who is originally from Lancashire, described in her highly novel presentation how she prevented a bike theft by distracting the thief with an explanation of filiform corrosion and how it would make the bike worthless. 

Carol will now go on to represent Wales in the FameLab UK final which will take place at the Science Museum in London on 26 April when she will be judged by leading researchers, media personalities and science policy-makers on the content, clarity and charisma of her presentation.  If Carol wins at this stage, she will then compete against contestants from around the world at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival in June 2017 for the title of overall winner of FameLab 2017.

Speaking about winning the Welsh heat of FameLab, Carol said: “I'm really excited to compete in the UK final and represent SPECIFIC and the Swansea University Materials Engineering corrosion group. Famelab is a brilliant concept, offering a platform for scientists to practice communicating their research passions in a concise format that is both understandable and exciting for the audience. The experience has been invaluable for me."
