Swansea University helping students shine with the Seren Network

Swansea University has started working with the Seren Network, a Welsh Government supported network of regional hubs designed to support Wales’ brightest sixth formers achieve their academic potential and gain access to leading universities.

Originally designed to encourage applications and admissions to Oxbridge Universities, the Seren Network routinely holds events throughout the course of students’ A-Levels, where academics from universities are invited to host workshops in certain subjects. 

The network has recently engaged with students who want to make the most of the excellent opportunities available closer to home.

Samantha Duffy from Swansea University’s Student Recruitment Office said: “Swansea’s engagement with the Seren Network provides an excellent engagement tool as it allows the University to showcase its academic rigour to an audience of some of the most promising students in Wales. 

“Our aim is to engage with these talented students and let them know about the many options open to them for studying at Swansea.  We have already spoken to students at some of the workshops who were inspired to learn more about the variety of courses Swansea offers.”

In December, academics from Chemistry (which will be reintroduced as a subject at Swansea University in 2017); Biology; Law; English Language, Creative Writing and Literature, History and Politics presented to sixth formers at the Swansea Seren Hub at Gower College and the Neath Port Talbot Hub at the Llandarcy Academy of Sport.  More workshops are planned this year.

Kelly Fountain is Director of Study and Head of Sixth Form Academy at the Neath Port Talbot College Group of Colleges.  She said: “The Seren Network aims to increase aspiration amongst top performing Welsh students and encourage applications to top universities.

“Since the Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend and Powys Network launched in January 2016, Swansea University has been instrumental in supporting our annual Seren conference and has provided many of our workshops delivered by top academics.

These workshops have covered many subject areas and the students attending the workshops have found them to be invaluable in terms of experiencing stretch and challenge sessions complementing the skills they develop at AS/A level and readying them for university.”
