Professor Gareth Stratton, Head of the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences and Director of the Applied Sports, Technology, Exercise and Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre said:

“The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences continues to make waves in research teaching and impact. We have bucked the trend and increased our UG student numbers and their entry grades this year which demonstrates the quality of what Swansea has to offer for those wishing to follow a career in the area.

“We also head the UK table for employability, another attractive statistic for applicants and we will broaden our portfolio of courses over the coming year to include social sciences and closer links with engineering. This will help to support our continuous growth as we seek to inspire staff and students to engage in cutting edge science that makes a difference. “

The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences achieved :

 v    9^th in the Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018

v    1^st in the UK for Employability (Times Good University Guide 2018)

v    Top 100 in Shanghai World Rankings

v    6^th in the UK National Student Survey 2017

v    58^th in the World by CEOWorld Magazine

At the start of this academic year, the school will enrol 400 sport and exercise science students, over two and a half times the number enrolling 5 years ago. In addition the school has attracted 63 Postgraduate Research students.

Professor Stratton continued: “Notably this year we start our first taught masters programme. The MA in Sport Integrity and Governance led by Professor Mike Macnamee has attracted students from 15 countries round the world and is truly international whereby students can complete their programme over 5 countries. These students will lead this field in the future as they find employment as integrity and governance directors in major sport and exercise organisations such as the International Olympic Committee, National Sports Organisations and Academic Institutions.

“We are also blessed to have fantastic staff leading cutting edge research with elite and professional sport; ethics, integrity and governance; clinical exercise, and health related activity in children, and in engineering and wellbeing with much of this work delivered in partnership with the sport and exercise industries.

“To help achieve our ambitions six new staff started full time permanent contracts in ASTEM this year. Dr Elizabeth Williams - Biomechanist, Dr John William Devine - Philosopher (MAiSI), Dr Andrew Harvey - Sociologist, Lowri Edwards - Pedagogist, Denise Hill - Sport Psychologist and Richard Metcalfe - Exercise physiologist.

“These new colleagues will bring fresh new ideas and help the continuous growth in teaching, research and impact as we look forward to making bigger waves in the future.”
