Professor Hywel Teifi Edwards’ contribution to Welsh life will be celebrated on a unique plate which will be unveiled at the University’s reception on Thursday 10 August.

Lowri Davies, winner of the Gold Medal in Craft and Design in 2009, was commissioned to create the plates in order to raise funds for the Hywel Teifi Memorial Fund.

Lowri has combined words, landscape and imagery to convey the tribute to the late Hywel Teifi, and it also features a poem by written by the chaired bard Alan Llwyd for Academi Hywel Teifi.

Lowri Davies said:  "It is a privilege to be asked to design and create a plate for the memorial fund. The poem surrounds a portrait of Hywel Teifi, which itself is framed by a line pattern of the River Art, and the mouth of the River Tawe. The colour reflects the colour used by the Academi”.

Only 150 of the plates have beencreated, which will be on sale for £75 each, with proceeds going to the Hywel Teifi Memorial Fund that supports Swansea University's student who study through the medium, ensuring opportunities to enrich their experiences and their careers.

This year’s Hywel Teifi Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Dr Simon Brooks of Swansea University’s Morgan Academy in the Babell Lên on Thursday 10 August 10.45am. Following the lecture, a reception will take place for alumni, staff and friends of the University in the Platiad restaurant at 12pm.

During the week, visitors to our stand will have the chance to participate in the University's special poetry workshop led by the chaired bard and former Welsh Children’s Poet Laureate, Aneirin Karadog, who is also a PhD candidate at the University’s Department of Welsh. The poetry workshops are sponsored by Literature Wales.

Members of our engagement team will be on hand throughout the week to answer any questions from young people about their options following A-level exams, and they will offer advice on the process of applying to university, and on the Clearing and Adjustment process.

Professor M. Wynn Thomas of the College of Arts and Humanities will judge the Crowning of the Bard on Monday afternoon, and will discuss the life, work and contribution of the writer, Emyr Humphreys, in the Babell Lên at 10.45am on Monday.

Professor Gwynedd Parry of the Department of Welsh will deliver the Barn lecture on Monday, 7 August at 4pm, on the title 'Lord Cledwyn of Penrhos, the Language Act 1967 and its Legacy’.

On Wednesday, we will celebrate the success of one of our postgraduate students, Lauren Evans, on winning this year’s Gwobr Merêd - a national prize awarded annually by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. The prize is in memory of Dr Meredith Evans and recognises the contribution of a current student who is a member of the Coleg Cymraeg to the Welsh life and culture, within the university and beyond. The celebration will be held at the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol stand at 4pm.
