The inspirational students were recognised at this year’s awards which are  organised by Swansea Council and numerous other organisations including the Swans. The High 5 Awards celebrate some of the most inspiring children and young people in Swansea. 

Emilia Sinden, a third year Psychology student at the university said: “As a student who supports the supported volunteering scheme I was so proud to see them win their High 5 Award. They work so hard for Discovery and they are such a kind, caring and funny bunch of individuals. The award is well deserved and they should all be so proud. Working with discovery has really aided my degree and has been useful for my future employment and my application for my post graduate study. I am frequently humbled by the individuals and find it extremely rewarding to work with the volunteers and I love that no day of volunteering is the same.”

Dan Notman, a supported volunteer said: “As a supported volunteer I am happy and proud to have won the award. Discovery does a lot with learning disabilities, autism etc. It doesn’t matter who you are you can join Discovery and be part of Discovery and have a home.”

Discovery is a student led charity based in Fulton House at the heart of Swansea University’s Singleton Campus. The organisation aims to enrich the lives of people in Swansea through volunteering.

Discovery is a registered charity that has been established since 1966. They currently have around 300 volunteers busy getting involved in over 40 voluntary projects all over the city! The organisation envisages a community where people are treated as equals and are not discriminated against or disadvantaged by society.

Discovery focuses on providing the best possible service to the people we work with in Swansea so we need skilled, trained & enthusiastic volunteers.

Discovery aims to:

Enrich the lives of people in Swansea in order to fulfil their potential as empowered individuals and as members of groups and communities.

Offer new experiences and opportunities through a broad range of student led activities in the community leading to increased mutual understanding and equality.

Actively support students to be aware of their personal development and the impact on themselves and the lives of others through their involvement in community based activities.

All our volunteers need to attend mandatory ‘Start Here’ training & complete an Enhanced DBS check with us before volunteering.  Volunteers can also attend additional training.

Discovery has achieved several volunteering accolades, including the Queen's Award for Volunteering Service, the highest achievable award for any charity. We also hold the Investing in Volunteers standard.
