Named after Rhodri Morgan, the Morgan Academy is a newly-established research-based think tank founded to deal with the pressing ‘wicked issues’ of public policy in Wales and the wider world. Based in Swansea University’s School of Management, it works across all University colleges, and carries out research alongside policy analysis, consultancy, dissemination and training. Its staff carries out commissioned and 'blue-sky' research in the social sciences and arts and humanities, and seek to make its primary impact as a policy centre.

During the event which will be held at the University’s Bay Campus, Professor Richard B. Davies, Vice-chancellor of Swansea University, will discuss Rhodri’s role as the university’s Chancellor, before the First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, will talk of Rhodri’s policy heritage. Historian Professor Prys Morgan will share his memories of his brother, before Professor Mike Sullivan, Director of the Morgan Academy, will discuss the agony and the ecstasy of writing for and about Rhodri Morgan, ahead of the release of his biography of the former First Minister. 

The event will also include a panel discussion featuring Jane Hutt AM, David Melding AM, former Plaid Cymru AM Jocelyn Davies, and Lady Jenny Randerson, where they will share their recollections of working with Rhodri Morgan as colleagues and opponents. Audience members will then be invited to ask questions to the panel which will be chaired by Helen Mary Jones, Deputy Director of the Morgan Academy.

Swansea University’s Pro-chancellor, Sir Roderick Evans, will consider Rhodri’s legacy and highlight the University’s part in maintaining that legacy through the work of the Morgan Academy. 

The Director of the Morgan Academy, Professor Mike Sullivan, will announce its plans for collaboration with the National Assembly for Wales, including the creation of an annual lecture in memory of Rhodri Morgan, which will take place for the first time in September 2018.
