Professor Brown is one of only a limited number of educators in the UK to achieve the organisation’s most prestigious award. He received the Principal Fellowship in recognition of his commitment and contribution to student learning, as well as the positive influence he has with colleagues as a strategic leader in teaching.

Since joining the University staff in 1986, Professor Brown (pictured) has held numerous leadership positions, including: Head of the Materials Research Centre, Deputy Head of College, Head of Learning & Teaching and Director of Research. Despite various leadership roles, Professor Brown has continually taught students since 1986 and recently taught undergraduates in Harbin Engineering University in China.

Professor Brown said: “I see teaching as an essential core activity for all academic staff, despite their academic rank, if done properly it can be fun for both the lecturer and the students. The nature and expectations of students change rapidly; lecturing students is a great way of keeping on your toes!”

Speaking about the award, Professor Brown added: "I am delighted to have received a Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.  As the national body for enhancing learning and teaching in Higher Education, the HEA is a critically important organisation. Principal Fellowship is the HEA’s highest level of teaching recognition and it is a real honour to have received this award".
