Famelab hears from future pioneers in communication

Three female scientists are to go through to the next round of FameLab UK 2017 after winning the Swansea heats of the science communication competition.

The Swansea winners were:

  • Elizabeth Evans a PhD student at Swansea University’s College of Science whose talk was entitled Debunking a few earthquake myths’
  • Carol Glover a technology transfer at Specific in Swansea University who looked at the fascinating world of corrosion.
  • Chloe Robinson, PhD student at College of Science who talked about eDNA: Catching Critters via Molecular Footprint 

FameLab winnersThe Famelab UK Swansea heats saw a range of science topics being tackled in a bid to discover the new pioneers in the communication of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

The winners of this heat will now be advancing to the regional round, where the winner of the regional round will represent Wales in the national championship, with the prospect of entering the International Championship.

FameLab is a communications competition designed to engage and entertain by breaking down science, technology and engineering concepts into three minute presentations.

Contestants from around the world take part armed only with their wits and a few props – the result is unpredictable and to encourage everyone taking part to find out about the latest research.

FameLab started way back in 2005 by the Cheltenham Science Festival and has quickly become established as a diamond model for successfully identifying, training and mentoring scientists and engineers to share their enthusiasm for their subjects with the public.

The participants had just three minutes to explain their research in a way that non-scientists would understand.

Sharon Bishop who organised the event, said, “It was a great night and we are very grateful to the participants who all did fantastic presentations.  I wish all the best to the three winners for the next round of FameLab 2017.”

Carol, Elizabeth and Chloe will be at the regional final, which takes place in Cardiff on Thursday 23rd February 2017 at Techniquest’s After Hours evening.
