Bernard Mitchell

Published by Parthian Books, Pieces of a Jigsaw is a selection of portraits from the Welsh Arts Archive, now held in the Richard Burton Archives in Swansea University. The Archive began in 1966, whilst studying in Reading; inspired by the work of Dylan Thomas, Bernard returned home to Swansea to photograph some of Dylan’s friends the ‘Swansea Gang’ including Vernon Watkins, Daniel Jones, and artists Ceri Richards and Alfred Janes.

Following 30 years working as a press photographer, Bernard restarted his earlier passion for documentary portraiture starting with Sir Kyffin Williams. During the 1990’s with the support of the National Library of Wales, Bernard continued to expand the archive with many prominent and contemporary artists, writers and photographers of Wales including Will Roberts, John Petts, Mererid Hopwood and R.S Thomas.

Mitchell will also be providing talks and signing books in local Swansea libraries, including Clydach Library on the 4th of December.
