Father Nigel (almost always addressed as Nigel) was born in Swansea but firmly and squarely considered himself to be a Llanelli man where his family lived and where he was brought up. He was educated at Old Road School and Llanelli Boys Grammar School, before working for some five years as a clerk in the Treasurer's Department with Llanelli Borough Council.

He then committed himself to doing one year's voluntary work, serving at a Residential Centre for the Severely Disabled in N.W. London; subsequently he worked at a Night Shelter for Homeless Alcoholics and Drug Addicts in Stoke on Trent; before serving at a Hospital for Elderly Patients in his home town in South Wales. 

He then studied at Cardiff University where he graduated in Religious Studies. Nigel was later employed as a Senior Project Worker at a Rehabilitation Centre for Homeless Alcoholics in the East End of London, before being accepted for ordination training with the Church in Wales. 

Nigel trained at Westcott House Cambridge where he was based for three years. During his time in Cambridge, he also read for a MPhil Degree in Theology at Cambridge University (Selwyn College). He was ordained at St Davids Cathedral and later worked in parishes and in academic environments. Whilst serving his Curacy in the Parish of St Peter's Carmarthen, Nigel also lectured in the 'Philosophy of Religion' at Trinity College Carmarthen.

He was appointed as the Anglican and Senior Chaplain at Swansea University in 2002. Nigel was tireless in his dedication to the role, and in his service to the University. He will also be remembered for setting up the Theology Public Lecture Programme at the University, which has featured internationally respected Church leaders and world renowned academics. Nigel will be greatly missed by staff and students. Our thoughts at this time are with his wife Trish and their family.

Books of condolence in memory of Nigel will be opened in the receptions of the Great Hall and Singleton Abbey from tomorrow (13 October).
