Guarded by the Tardis and a ‘Back to the Future’ De Lorean car you will be able to meander through, interact with, listen, look, touch and generally play around with exhibits all about Time.

Discover how the Higgs boson, often called the “God particle”, was first detected in the mock-up of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, see a glacial calving in Greenland, tell the time with tree rings, witness the history of the universe displayed on a 30 metre time wall, and hear the sounds of deep space as you watch a time-lapse video of the southern stars.

Oriel Science’s mission will be to bring the wonders of Science to the public through exhibitions on a general science theme, which will inspire visitors to think and explore how science and technology impact their daily lives.

Some of the highlights include:

• a mock-up of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider
• videos of a Greenland glacier calving
• a hands-on exhibit about telling time with tree rings
• time travel with black holes
• a 30 metre time wall illustrating the history of the Universe
• an immersive video installation with a soundtrack from the Voyager spacecraft’s Plasma Wave instrument, where visitors can hear the “sounds” of deep space.

Time is the first Oriel Science pop up exhibition, and our vision is for a permanent Science exhibition space in Swansea which will house rolling thematic exhibitions.

Professor Chris Allton, Oriel Science Director and particle physicist at Swansea University, said:

“Oriel Science’s city centre location offers a place to experience the amazing science stories unfolding at Swansea University, through visceral, hands-on exhibitions.

Our visitors will learn about the science that impacts their everyday lives, both today and in the future, and be part of the incredible scientific journey the world is travelling along”

 The venue plans to run a series of activities through the October half term giving families and young children the opportunity to engage in Science in the community. 

Schools are also invited to come along to the exhibition to experience snapshots of the University’s Science research. They can register their interest by emailing the University’s S4 programme s4science@swansea.ac.uk

The Time exhibition is located in Swansea City centre; Princess Way, (between Castle Square and The Kingsway, next to Zinco Lounge). 

It will be open every weekend up until Christmas from 10am - 4pm.
