‌‌The University’s growing world-wide reputation has seen it climb 71 places in the QS rankings in the last two years, and Swansea now holds its highest ever position.

According to the latest QS rankings indicators, Swansea University is:

• Ranked in the top 200 for Int‌ernational Students (the proportion of students that are international);
• Ranked in the top 250 for International Faculty (the proportion of faculty members that are international);
• Ranked in the top 350 for Faculty Student (the ratio between the number of academic staff and number of students)
• Ranked in the top 400 for Citation by Faculty (the average number of citations obtained per faculty member, and is an estimate of the impact and quality of the scientific work produced by universities).

‌Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott, Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are very pleased Swansea University is making progress and continually improving its standing in international rankings, such as this year’s QS rankings. Each year the challenge to stay within the top 400 increases as we compete with the world’s elite institutions, so improving our rank is quite an achievement.”

“Just last month, in the Academic Ranking of World Universities’ Shanghai Rankings Subject Rankings, our College of Engineering ranked in three areas; top 200 for Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Sciences and Engineering; and in the top 300 for Materials Science and  Engineering.

“This further accolade came after our Engineering disciplines were earlier ranked among the world's elite by QS in the World University Rankings by Subject 2016, back in March.  Civil and Structural Engineering retained its rank of 151-200 from last year, and this year Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering has also joined the top 200 moving up from a position within the top 250 last year. Mathematics also features within the rankings occupying a top 350 position.

“In the week that the University proudly hosts the highly prestigious British Science Festival, again shining the international spotlight on our world-leading research – the QS rankings for 2016/2017, with our consistently high rankings in other independent surveys and league tables for student satisfaction, employability, and research excellence – confirm that Swansea University continues on a strong upward trajectory, strengthening its reputation for international excellence.”

The news of this further improved international reputation has been preceded by a wave of recent successes at Swansea, including:

-       Achieving the University’s ambition to become a UK top 30 research institution – Swansea was ranked 26^th (up from 52^nd) in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF2014);

-       Awarded 5-Stars for excellence in the global QS Stars quality assessment, placing us amongst other world-leading institutions to have also achieved 5-Stars such as Harvard and Oxford;

-       Achieving a UK top 15 position for producing global graduates capable of securing professional level jobs or entering graduate level further study (Higher Education Statistics Agency, Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey);

-       Climbing into the UK top 40 in The Guardian University League Tables for 2017, to 39^th place – the largest jump by a Welsh university;

-       Ranking in the global top 200 in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) world ranking of the ‘most international universities’;

-       Ranking 14th in the UK for student satisfaction, as measured in the National Student Survey 2016;

-       Shortlisted in the Times Higher Education Awards 2016, for the THE DataPoints Merit Award, which recognises a UK university that combines exceptional performance across teaching and research missions, emphasising the additional value that the institution provides to its students and graduates.

The University’s magnificent £450m science and innovation Bay Campus development, which formally opened in September 2015, has extended the institution’s international reach, allowing the University to expand its growing international strategic partnership and industry-academia collaborations.
