Professor Hopper CBE FREng FRS is an engineer and computer scientist whose contributions to academia and industry have had significant global impact. He graduated from Swansea University in 1974 with a degree in Computer Technology and was awarded an Honorary Degree from the University in 2005.  He is the Professor of Computer Technology and Head of the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory and an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.   

Professor Hopper was awarded The Bakerian Medal and Lecture 2017 for his outstanding research in computer technology, with significant economic impacts, in particular his work in computer networking and sentient computing systems with an aim to providing sustainability. He will be presented with a medal and a gift of £10,000 at the Premier Awards dinner in autumn 2016. The associated prize lecture will be delivered in spring 2017.

Last month, Swansea University reported that another of its alumni, and Honorary Awardee Sir John Meurig Thomas, who also won the Bakerian Medal in 1990, has become the first ever graduate of Swansea University to be awarded the Royal Society 2016 Royal Medal for Physical Sciences.
