Amy, who is from Port Talbot will face nine other FameLab competitors from around the UK who will all attempt to convey a scientific concept of their choice in just three minutes before being interrogated by a panel of judges, including Bang Goes The Theory and The Gadget Show presenter Dallas Campbell and evolutionary biologist and self-proclaimed ‘bone geek’ Ben Garrod.

Amy, who studies at the Department of Psychology in the Collge of Human and Health Sciences, will speak about her research which focuses on characterising subjective cognitive impairment in order to identify those who may be experiencing the very early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. This has the potential to contribute to identifying Alzheimer’s approximately 10-12 years before the current diagnosis, and therefore help millions of people to seek earlier interventions.

In her talk Amy uses everyday examples of memory loss and attention lapses to illustrate that while everyone experiences ‘senior moments’ they sometimes can point to a subjective cognitive impairment and lead to more serious conditions including Alzheimer’s disease.

If successful Amy will receive £1,000, up to £750 to spend on a science communication activity and also go on represent the UK in the FameLab International Finals at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival in June 2016 which features more than 25 other contestants from around the world.

Amy said: “I wanted to do FameLab because it is a challenge and a great skill to be able to communicate complex scientific information in an understandable, engaging, and concise manner. I am incredibly happy to have come this far!  My career aspirations are to continue working in dementia related research and to transfer this knowledge into clinical practice.”
