The programme recognises the achievements of exceptional female scientists across the globe and awards them with fellowships to help further their research.

Caroline is a third year dual-PhD student studying at Swansea University Medical School and the Université Grenoble Alpes in France, whose research focuses on the relationship between selenium and cartilage.

The fellowship has awarded her €15,000 to help develop her research which examines at the impact of the environment on health, looking at how in parts China where soils are selenium deficient, diseases of the bones and joints are also endemic.

Caroline has used a model of cartilage growth developed in the Medical School to show the effect of selenium depletion and how it increases the risk of developing osteoarthritis which is a joint disease affecting 43.4 million people worldwide.
