Dr Pope’s lecture, entitled ‘The weather and climate: How will it change in the future?’, takes place on Wednesday, December 2, and is hosted by the University’s College of Science.  In the lecture, Dr Pope will describe some of the main characteristics of climate and weather and explain how our climate is affected by natural and man-made influences, and how these changes are likely to affect Wales in the future.

The event begins with a drinks reception at 6pm in Faraday Lecture Theatre A, Faraday Building. This will be followed by a welcome by Professor Steve Wilks, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dr Pope’s lecture at 6:30pm in the Faraday Lecture Theatre, which finishes at 7:30pm.

The lecture is free to attend and members of the public are welcome. The lecture will be recorded and will be available on the NRN-LCEE public lectures website after the event.

Professor David Thomas, Director of the NRN-LCEE, said: “Vicky Pope is an internationally recognised climate expert. It is a rare opportunity for us to be able to hear about some of the latest climate research just ahead of the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris in a few weeks’ time.

“I am sure that staff, students and members of the public will have many of their questions answered, as well as being challenged during what I am sure will be an exciting evening."

As Head of Integration and Growth for the UK Met Office, Dr Vicky Pope is responsible for maximising the benefits for government of its science capability and that of its partners.

This involves identifying opportunities for innovation; integrating cutting edge environmental science developed by the Met Office and its partners, with the latest technology to provide new and improved services.

This role draws on Dr Pope’s experience as a climate scientist and in translating that science for Government and others.

Her current interests include working with the space, hydrology, transport and digital economy sectors to develop new services, as well as advisory roles on climate change.

The Sêr Cymru National Research Network for Low Carbon, Energy and Environment (NRN-LCEE) is a major pan-Wales initiative funded by the Welsh Government Sêr Cymru initiative and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales.

The Network supports collaborative and interdisciplinary research in Wales into the interactions between land, water, the provision of food and energy production, at different spatial scales across air-land-water systems.

The NRN-LCEE is a pan-Wales initiative comprised of partners from Bangor, Aberystwyth, Cardiff, South Wales and Swansea Universities, the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology at Bangor, the British Geological Survey Wales, and the UK MetOffice.
