Professor Ian Cluckie is an Emeritus Professor in the College of Engineering at Swansea University, and was previously the Pro- Vice- Chancellor for Science and Engineering.  

He is an expert in areas such as weather radar, flood control and water resource management.

‌For the past decade, Professor Cluckie has been active in building institutional links and research collaborations between Swansea University and many Chinese partners, including joint supervision of PhD students, chairing international conferences and giving keynote speeches at many research seminars.

Professor Cluckie has been a visiting Professor at Sun Yat-Sen University for more than fourteen years and is also a visiting Professor at Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute and Anhui University.  He has also provided advice on a number of large government projects in China, including the Three Gorges Dam.  

Professor Cluckie has been a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 1997 and through his recommendation, Professor Jianyun Zhang (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the President of the NHRI) was elected a Foreign Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering last year.  

This strong link has helped develop a platform between Swansea University, NHRI and Hohai University which is a top university in water resources.

Friendship Award

This year, Professor Cluckie was selected by the Chinese government as the Friendship Award winner for 2015, the highest honour awarded to foreigners.  

He has been invited by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs to visit China at the end of September for the award ceremony, and to join a government advisory group as a foreign expert.  

Chinese Premier Keqiang Li will meet with the Friendship Award winners and invite them to participate in a National Day reception to be held on 30 September, in which all Chinese senior government officials and senior foreign government officials, such as ambassadors, will join the celebration.
