To mark the launch of the scheme the College of Law hosted a drinks reception in the Council chamber in the Abbey Building, which was attended by a number of placement providers, careers advisers and students interested in applying to the scheme.

Stuart Macdonald, co-ordinator of the work placement scheme, said:

“The scheme is enormously popular with both students and placement providers. It offers our students the opportunity to gain valuable experience, which boosts their CVs and helps them to make informed decisions about their future careers. We are fortunate to have the support of a large number of local organisations, from solicitors and barristers to Swansea Police and the Youth Justice Board for Wales”.

‌This year is promising to be more successful than ever before, with an increasing number of organisations in and around Swansea coming on board, including solicitors, barristers, criminal justice agencies and the voluntary sector.

Megan Parry, who last summer completed a placement at the Public Defender Service, said:

“My experience was altogether fantastic. I have gained a valuable insight into how working for the government works, but also how a solicitor operates with their client. This experience has really made me want to go back for more, possibly on the other side with the Crown Prosecution Service”.

The scheme is now in its eighth year, with over 300 students having completed placements since it was set up.

Jon Howden-Evans, head of the Swansea Employability Academy, said:

“To see the University’s Council Chamber full of students and local employers is testament to the enthusiasm and commitment of colleagues and our partner organisations in creating meaningful placements for our students”.
