In April the men’s rugby match, climax of the 18^th annual games, will be staged at the Liberty Stadium in front of an estimated 20,000 fans.

For the last four years the match has been held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Last year Swansea City’s European campaign meant the match couldn’t be held at the Liberty.

‌Welsh Varsity chair Paul Thorburn is excited about the tournament heading back to Swansea.

 “This falls in line with board’s decision to make the fixture an annual home and away event. The Welsh Varsity competition is one of the best occasions in the Welsh student calendar and the biggest student sporting event in Wales.

“Varsity’s return to Swansea is exciting news for the city and the students.”

The tournament has grown hugely over the last five years, More than 20,000 students cheered on their universities last year.

Swansea took home the rugby cup for a second year, beating Cardiff 19-15, so they will be looking to retain their title on home turf. Cardiff, however, won the overall Varsity shield.

Swansea University sports officer Charlotte Peters, said: “It's hugely exciting and the fact that our athletes finally get to play in front of a home crowd on home soil is fantastic.”

Bryn Griffiths, vice-president of Cardiff’s Sports and Athletic Union president, added:  “Our teams will be eager to lay down the gauntlet to Swansea on their turf after four successful years at home. With a new head of rugby in post our eyes will well and truly be on the Cup as well as continuing our dominance in the Varsity shield.

“Be sure to make the trip west as the Liberty Stadium will be close to capacity and is sure to provide a monstrous atmosphere surpassing that of previous years.”

More than 30 sports clubs – from netball to badminton and ultimate Frisbee - will compete for the coveted shield which has been held by Cardiff since the tournament began in 1997.
