Swansea University is delighted to announce that Mrs Christine Watson, manager at Discovery, the student volunteering organisation, and Professor John Williams, gastroenterologist and researcher in the College of Medicine, have been recognised in the 2014 New Year's Honours list.
- Christine Watson, manager of Discovery, received an MBE for "services to Student Volunteering and to Education in Swansea"
- John Williams, Professor of Health Services Research, received a CBE for "services to Medicine".
Christine Watson manages Discovery, a registered charity based on campus that has been running since 1966.
Discovery places students in a wide range of voluntary projects which benefit the community and vulnerable groups, such as working on a community farm, supporting adults with learning difficulties, working with disabled children, and organising activities for children from asylum-seeker or refugee backgrounds.
Discovery currently has around 300 student volunteers busy getting involved in over 40 voluntary projects all over Swansea.
John Williams is Professor of Health Services Research at the College of Medicine, Swansea University, and Consultant Gastroenterologist at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.
His research interests are focused on better diagnosis, treatments and services, particularly in gastroenterology, and more patient involvement in the process.
He has a long-standing interest in improving information systems that support patient care and set-up, and directs the Health Informatics Unit at the Royal College of Physicians of London.
