Former mathematics student Dewi Griffiths, who graduated last year, and lives in Llanfynydd, has had continuing success in his athletics and Cross Country events this season.

In his last 18 months Dewi has gone from strength to strength and also won the opportunity to go to America to train at the Steve Jones camp in Colorado and hopes to return there in the autumn.

In this last year Dewi has represented Wales and GB and has just run the Wales A standard for the 10000m and has been selected for the Wales athletics team.

The Team Wales swimming squad will have a strong representation from Swansea University students with Jazmin Carlin (200,400 and 800 freestyle); Georgia Davies (50 and 100 backstroke and 4x 100 medley); Alys Thomas (4x100 medley); and Hannah McCarthy (4x 100 free team, 4 x 100 medley) all being selected to compete at the Games.

Another Swansea University student, Amber Wheatley will also be involved in the lead up to the Games but won’t be representing the UK.

Amber, a Virgin Gorda native studying at Swansea University, will represent the VI territory next month in a leadership conference which is being held in advance of this year’s Commonwealth Games. Amber is the first VI representative to attend the 33 Fifty Commonwealth Youth Leadership Programme, which will be held from 17-20 July in Scotland. 

The 21 year old student is currently studying medicine at Swansea University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science and hopes to return to the VI to practise as an oncologist.

Ms Wheatley was selected from thousands of applicants to join 99 other participants from throughout the Commonwealth. The 33 Fifty Youth Leadership Programme is organised by Common Purpose and the Royal Commonwealth Society as part of the Legacy Education Programmes of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
