Swansea student’s business start-up wins best Social Enterprise award

Swansea University Medical Genetics student, Jake Ireland has won an award for best Social Enterprise in the Terry Matthews Challenge which was set up by the billionaire business magnate to nurture business start-up ideas from Swansea University students.

Jake’s business is called ‘NoteShare’, and is designed to facilitate sharing revision notes online. The funds from this first part of work will go towards supporting education in deprived local areas

Jake who is currently in his third year of study at Swansea University also has other business ideas in development including plans to design an iPhone app which links students timetable to a detailed campus maps and GPS, in order to point students and others to the location of their next lecture or meeting.

Jake said: “I am thrilled to get the award for my start-up Noteshare, having first thought it up at the end of my second year when I realised that a lot of the other students were reading my course notes. I am pleased with its success and I am now focussed on my app project and hope to get that off the ground soon.”

The competition judges were Sir Terry Matthews, Sir Roger Jones, Simon Gibson OBE, Debra Williams and Jill Burgess.
