Rhowch Gynnig Arni (Give it a Go) is a free two-day residential course funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, and is open to year 12 pupils across Wales who are studying Welsh second language at AS level.

The course offers an excellent opportunity for individuals to revise and practice their Welsh language skills in preparation for A-level, and as well as having the opportunity to develop their fluency and confidence, pupils will also learn of the benefits of studying Welsh and using the language in the workplace in future.

The course content will be taught by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol staff from Swansea, Cardiff, South Wales and Aberystwyth Universities, who will discuss the advantages of studying Welsh as a degree subject.

During the course, the Archdruid, Dr Christine James, Associate Professor at Swansea University’s Academi Hywel Teifi will take part in a question and answer session; the Welsh-language author and TV presenter, Bethan Gwanas, will discuss her books and work within the media, and on Friday, 3 July, the Welsh band Sŵnami will be playing live at Swansea’s Welsh centre, Tŷ Tawe.

Dr Rhian Jones, the leader of the course, said: “We look forward to welcoming pupils to Swansea. A variety of activities have been prepared in collaboration with other universities in order to provide enough opportunities for pupils to enjoy the use of Welsh over the two days and get a taste of studying at university. The aim is to motivate them to continue to study the language after finishing their A-levels and encourage them to choose Welsh as a degree subject”.

Nearly forty pupils from across Wales have already registered to attend the residential course, and Kayleigh Jones, an A level student who attended last year’s course, said: “I had a great time on the Rhowch Gynnig Arni course last year. It was wonderful to be able to practice my Welsh and socialise with people from across Wales. After the experience, I decided to study Welsh and Mathematics at Swansea University, and I look forward to starting my degree course in September”.
