The conference is for pupils in year 10, who may be already studying German or thinking of doing so. 

The event launches the Think German Wales Network, a new collaborative initiative for promoting German, which is supported by the German Embassy.

Speakers come from the German department at Swansea and other organisations, and include:

• Ms Jill Evans, Member of European Parliament:  "Wales, Germany and Europe"
• Luke Edwards: "How to Enjoy German Horror Films" (with clips)
• Frau Christiane Günther: "How to be Polite in German"
• Mr Alex Pickering, Goethe Institut: "How to Get Ahead: German in the World of Work"
• Ms Ute Paetzig, UK-German Connection: "Opportunities for Visits, Exchanges, Study Trips in Germany"

Professor Julian Preece from the department of languages, translation and communication is establishing the Wales Think German Network, with Dr Anna Saunders of Bangor University.  

Professor Preece said:

"Our aim is to promote interest in the German language as well as Germany itself, its history and culture, especially amongst the young, linking up schools, institutions of higher education, businesses and cultural organisations.

If you are already learning German, we hope to help you to improve your performance in future assessments and inspire you to learn more; if you have no German, we hope to stimulate your interest in the language, the people, and their history and culture."

•    German speakers are highly sought after by British employers.  A CBI survey put it top of employers' list of languages

•    Germany is the UK’s biggest trading partner. In 2012, Germany exported goods and services worth almost €73bn to the UK, and imported UK goods and services worth about €44bn.
