Civil Engineering students visit Swansea University's new Bay Campus site

Over the past year, a group of final year MEng Civil Engineering students from Swansea University have visited Swansea University’s new Bay Campus with Associate Professor Terry Noonan, giving them their first introduction to the commercial world as they worked in groups with local consultants to deliver real projects from design to construction.

During the students’ visits to the Bay Campus site, they were greeted by Senior Project Directors of VINCI Construction UK, and were given a presentation that reflected the current construction work of the Bay Campus, as well as some of the major topics relevant to the design requirements of their degree course.

The Civil Engineering students were also given an extensive tour of the site, experiencing at first hand the sheer scale and magnitude of the new campus buildings as they accessed the upper floors of the Great Hall that sits at the heart of the campus.

Whilst touring the site, the students learned of the scope of the Bay Campus development, its sustainability, and of the site’s history and constraints. They also learned about technical issues relating to the designs of the Great Hall, student accommodation block and library building.

The students also had the opportunity to meet Naomi Boast, a former Swansea University Engineering student who now works as a Site Engineer for VINCI Construction. Naomi had previously gained valuable site experience with VINCI through the University’s SPIN (Swansea Paid Internship Network) scheme. Following her SPIN placement, she was offered a full time position by VINCI after completing her degree.

Reem Boujard, one of the Civil Engineering students that visited the new Bay Campus, said: “Our visits to the Bay Campus with VINCI were particularly interesting as it seemed to bring together most of the topics we touched on during our four years study. It's a very ambitious project that's developing at an incredible rate. The new campus is going to be absolutely huge, almost like a second city”.

The Campus will provide academic, student accommodation and research space, the latter being in a series of agreements with international and national companies. Whilst development work of the Bay Campus will continue up until 2020, the majority of the works will be completed during this first phase of construction and open for the first intake of students in September 2015.
