The conference will exhibit work being carried out by various teams and centres at Swansea University, including the Centre for NanoHealth, the Institute of Life Sciences, Life Science Exchange, National Virtual Incubation Network and Business Marketing promoting campus development.

Professor Gareth Morgan  from the College of Medicine is speaking as Chair of the Life Science Sector Panel on "Delivering on a Life Sciences Strategy”.

This year’s event is focused on regenerative medicine, an area where Swansea University has particular strength.

Dr Ilyas Khan,  a lecturer in regenerative medicine at the Centre of NanoHealth will also be  speaking at the event, with a talk entitled: “Can we heal osteoarthritic joints? How patients and business are leading the way”.

Ilyas has been responsible for translating research concepts into clinical applications in particular for musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoarthritis, the single largest cause of physical disability in the world. 

Osteoarthritis is primarily a disease of ageing but we are now finding many young people arriving at clinics with joint injuries.  Currently there are no clinically validated therapies available to stabilise or reverse the disease.

Ilyas has been instrumental in investigating how to understand the disease process better and to find potential avenues of treatment.  Working with individual patients, clinicians and companies, he is making incredible strides in developing effective treatments for osteoarthritis that have the potential to be in the clinic in the near term.
