The club which is held every Tuesday (4-6pm) at Swansea University is run by the Technocamps programme, which has already engaged with over 10,000 pupils over the past three years.

The after school club is open to young people of all ages, mainly for 11+ but primary pupils are also welcome to join in as activities are tailored to suit individual needs.

It will focus on giving youngsters the opportunity to develop their coding skills in a supervised environment, with skilled Computer Science staff. This includes a variety of tools used to develop their understanding of coding through programming environments such as Scratch, Games Salad, Greenfoot, Python, App Inventor and the LEGO Mindstorm software.

Professor Faron Moller, Director of the Technocamps programme at Swansea University, said, ‘We wanted to provide young people who have already got experience of coding or with a passion to learn, with an opportunity to take their knowledge a step further. 

‘There has been a demand from parents and teachers to provide this opportunity as more and more pupils want the chance to continue to learn this key skill, which is becoming more apparent for future jobs in the tech industry.’     

Hazel Israel whose son Will, a year 9 pupil from Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr who has attended the club, said, ‘He had really achieved something. Thank you so much again for your help getting him plugged in - he's hooked! I knew he would be from all I had heard about how fab the Technocamps initiative is and it exceeded my expectations. We're going to be there every week - I'm afraid that I was equally sucked in and the facilitators didn't seem to mind me hanging on so if it's OK I'll trail along and do some coding myself.

You were right about the facilitators they are so welcoming, attentive and patient. What I loved was their enthusiasm - it is so infectious. They really skilfully managed the expectations and experience levels of a wide-ranging group - first class.’
