Young volunteer rewarded for helping his local community

A young Egypt Centre volunteer has been recognised for his contribution to the local community.

Owain Brooks, aged 15 from Port Eynon, has been awarded the West Glamorgan High Sheriff’s Award for 2013 in the category of ‘young people voluntarily helping their local community’.

Syd Howells, Volunteer Manager said:

“ Congratulations to Owain for winning this prestigious award. Owain has been volunteering at the Egypt Centre since October 2011 and has recently achieved over 100 volunteering hours.  We’re very proud of our young volunteers without them it would be very difficult to achieve the level of service we at the Egypt Centre offer the general public.”

The annual award ceremony was hosted by the High Sheriff William Hopkins, in the Old Town Hall in Neath. More than 20 awards were presented to both groups and individuals for their voluntary work and contribution to the community.

Mr Hopkins said: "The awards are a way of giving recognition to young people, adults, youth groups, clubs and community organisations who voluntarily make an outstanding effort and contribution to the community."

The awards have been running for more than ten years and are split into two categories, adults who voluntarily give their time to help young people and young people who voluntarily help their local community.

Mr Hopkins said: "I am impressed by the voluntary work in the community and I would like to congratulate every award winner."

  • The Egypt Centre, Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, situated at the Swansea University officially opened in 1998. The collection comprises over 4500 objects largely from the pharmacist Sir Henry Wellcome collection (1853-1936).  The Egyptian material largely covers the period c.100,000 B.C. - A.D. 500 in two galleries and includes jewellery dating from the time of Tutankhamun, weapons, a mummified crocodile and much, much more. There are lots of hands on activities for children and adults alike, the most popular of which is the dummy mummy.
