These are tough times in the job market, and work experience can make all the difference, which is why Swansea University has launched the Swansea Paid Internship Network (SPIN), in partnership with the Evening Post. SPIN will give students a chance to gain valuable period of paid relevant experience with local employers during the summer break.
SPIN was launched at the University on 19 April, under the auspices of the Swansea Employability Academy. Professor Hilary Lappin Scott, Pro Vice Chancellor and head of the Academy, who hosted the launch, told the audience that SPIN would be "a network of supportive employers who will help us to develop our graduates for the benefit of the region"
The internships will be 4–6 weeks long and will take place between June and September. Students will be paid £200 a week for their work by the organisation. 500 students have so far expressed an interest, and the University, working with the Evening Post, is now looking for employers to sign up.
Evening Post editor Jonathan Roberts, who spoke at the launch, said it was an opportunity for employers "to find a star for your business at an affordable price". Anwen Robinson of global software business Unit 4 said "employers need to support this network".
Other work experience initiatives run by the Employability Academy include the Week of Work. Lloyd Ihenacho, a 2nd year business management, told the audience that "this was one of the most beneficial things I have done as a student"
