Swansea Uni students hit ‘bull’s-eye’ in University Archery Championships

Swansea University students took up their “bows and arrows” at the hotly contested BUCS Outdoors Archery Championships at the weekend and came away with four medals.

The Swansea University team had a great weekend competing at the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) outdoors archery championships which were held at the superb setting of the Lilleshall National Sports Centre, Shropshire.

In the main event on Saturday, Swansea shot a total of 254 archers across all categories and came away with four medal winners.

They were:

Daniel Hallet won the Gents Novice Longbow category

Luke Edwards got 3rd in Gents Novice Barebow.

Anna Lawrence got 3rd in Ladies Experienced Barebow

Ste Jones got 3rd in Gents Experienced Barebow.

 

And on the Sunday, the Head 2 Head round was a huge success in its first year (although this was unfortunately not worth BUCS points). There were no separate novice categories in this event and in the Compound and Unsighted categories they didn't split male/female either.

The point of the Head2Head was to open Students' eyes to the wider world of archery so they were shot with a qualifying round and then a series of Head to Head matches, in the same style as the World Cup. In this sense it was a huge success, with the unusual addition of those not competing or already eliminated cheering for their team mates in the later rounds and a crowd of around 150 watching the finals.

Swansea University’s Richard Mill reached the quarter finals of the mixed Compound category before being knocked out by GB squad member Naomi Jones who eventually went on to win.

Ste Jones reached the quarter finals of the mixed Unsighted category (combined barebow and longbow).

Anna Lawrence reached the 1/8ths round, of the Unsighted category not bad considering she was up against the gents too!

SU Archery Club Captain Tori Moore said; “ A fantastic result for Swansea University. Four medals and many personal bests shot, despite some seriously adverse weather conditions on the Saturday and a completely unfamiliar format for a lot of the archers on the Sunday. All in all a great weekend’s work!”
