Tutor Ben Martin from the Centre for Academic Success and PhD students Andrew Ryan and Gerrit Niezen designed and built an app for surfers called Johnny on the Spot.

It helps surfers to log and share wave sizes, weather conditions and other surfing information.

They came second in the competition held during Wales’s first ever Start-up Weekend www.startupweekend.org,  part of the university’s Global Entrepreneurship Week. http://www.swansea.ac.uk/media-centre/latest-news/globalentrepreneurshipweekatswanseauniversity.php which was marked with a series of events, including a keynote speech by Wales’s foremost entrepreneur Sir Terry Matthews.

Their business was chosen from over 40 initial pitches and they are now in with the chance to pitch their idea along with rivals from Harvard and MiT in Google’s headquarters in San Francisco Bay.

‌But first they have to succeed in the Champions Circle round against teams from around the world – and that is decided on votes.

Supporters can vote once a day, every day until the closing date of December 6th.
