Pupils to showcase their robots at the Technocamps ‘National Robotics Competition’

Young people (11-19) from across the convergence area of Wales will put their programming skills to the test when they battle it out to become the winner of the National Robotics competition at the Big Bang Cymru next week.

The competition, being run by Technocamps and supported by LEGO Education, will take place at the Treforest University of South Wales (formerly University of Glamorgan) on Wednesday 3rd July.  Pupils from Bangor and Aberystwyth Schools will also be participating in their very own regional competitions.

Neil Taylor, LEGO Education Territory Manager for Wales, Scotland & NI, said, ‘‘LEGO Education have been very impressed by the work that Technocamps are carrying out across Wales and have been very happy to support them in this competition. 

It has been a fantastic opportunity for students to work as part of a team, to get hands on and be creative in developing their design, engineering and programming skills, and apply them to a real life scenario.  We can’t wait to see the results on the day and hope that the experience will have inspired the participants to continue an interest in the STEM subject areas.’’

Inspired to get to grips with building and programming their very own robots, the pupils have been working tirelessly over the past few months on their environment challenges in their Technoclubs which are run during lunchtimes and after school. 

Using Lego Mindstorms and Arduinos the pupils had to design and make a robot that performs a specific task to help the environment of the future.  In teams of six the pupils have also been tasked with creating a video and a poster that provides an insight into what their challenge is all about. 

Director of Technocamps, Professor Faron Moller, added, ‘‘The competition has enabled the pupils to develop their problem solving, communication and team work skills, as well as their knowledge in Computer Science in a fun and inventive way. Robotics is becoming more and more advanced especially in terms of Artificial Intelligence and I look forward to seeing what the young people have managed to achieve.’’
