Two summer schools were organised in conjunction thanks to funding from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol between 4-5 July.

The aim was for pupils from all over Wales to put their language skills into practice and for those who are learning Welsh as a second language to hear Welsh outside the classroom and possibly continue with their studies at University.

Those who attended the modern languages summer school got a taste of other languages and discussed foreign films while the others participated in several workshops including a session on short stories with Ioan Kidd.

They also received some advice on how to prepare and present their UCAS forms and a session about the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

Present Welsh language students were there to offer some guidance about student life at the University and to answer any queries they had about the Welsh language provision available.

Kayleigh Jones from Gower College said: ‘‘The course enabled me to practice my Welsh as I speak English at home. I enjoyed walking around campus and meeting other Welsh language learners. The most useful session was the one about personal statements as I am in the process of applying to go to University. I hope to get a place to study Welsh at Swansea University!’’

Rhian Jones of Academi Hywel Teifi, Swansea University added: ‘‘I would like to thank everybody who attended the course and to the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for their funding. It was great to see so many pupils socialise through the medium of Welsh and I hope the event becomes a permanent fixture in the University calendar in future.’’
