Event summary: Although data-driven analysis of social networks may be a popular subject of scientific and technical research, most of us probably want to know how these networks really work in our everyday lives, and how they can contribute to our personal and professional development.

In this talk, Julia Hobsbawm argues that fresh approaches to social networks are needed to fully understand how they work and to fully exploit their potential.  Arguing for longitudinal study in workplaces and amongst professional freelancers, she will explain how social networks are vital for our careers but that the practice of networking itself needs far closer examination if we are to understand why the better networked individuals achieve better success and how networking should therefore be understood as one of the main drivers of economic productivity in the workplace.

Julia Hobsbawm is a businesswoman and the UK’s first honorary professor of networking at Cass Business School in London. She is CEO and founder of Editorial Intelligence, the knowledge networking business. Her aim to “bring connections and ideas to professional individuals who have been isolated for too long in their corporate silos” has become the benchmark of modern social networking.

She is the only UK media businesswoman member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on “Informed Societies”. In her twenty five years media career spanning Tellex to Twitter, she has worked in book publishing, television and politics.

She is the author of several books, and is co-writing the new Editorial Intelligence education books and tutorials on networking for the Curious Corporation.
