Global Entrepreneurship Week at Swansea University

Students who are thinking of setting up their own business will have plenty of advice and inspiration available on campus as Swansea University plays a full part in Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) which runs from 18-24 November.

GEW is the world’s largest campaign to promote entrepreneurship. Each year, it plays a critical role in encouraging the next generation of entrepreneurs to consider starting up their own business.

In the UK, the campaign is hosted by Youth Business International, a global network of initiatives that help young entrepreneurs to start their own business, in partnership with Barclays.

GEW at Swansea University will be launched by Sir Terry Matthews together with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Richard B Davies, and Simon Gibson.

Sir Terry Matthews is a graduate of Swansea University (Electronic and Electrical Engineering, 1969.  He is a Welsh-born entrepreneur and Wales' first billionaire, having founded or funded over 80 companies in the high tech communications field.

Highlights of Global Entrepreneurship Week include:

  • The £250 Challenge!   £250 will be awarded to every business idea put forward by students which has the potential to be developed, and each team has until 31st March 2014 to implement their idea and make a profit.  Organised in conjunction with Konetics, the Swansea student entrepreneurship network
  • Debra Williams, one of Britain’s leading businesswomen and an expert on comparison websites, having been Managing Director at both Confused.com and Tesco Compare  (18 November, 6pm, 5th floor, Institute of Life Sciences)
  • Launch of Student Business Incubator, a brand new space to support student entrepreneurs, to be opened by Sir Terry Matthews (19 November, 3.15 pm, Haldane Building)
  • Address by Andrew Fiddaman, executive director of Youth Business International
  • Sir Terry Matthews Keynote Address-" Entrepreneurial thinking- developing lifelong habits'  (19 November, 5pm Taliesin Theatre).

Terry Matthews and Mango BikesAs well as these events, there are workshops and learning sessions on all aspects of running a business, many of them hosted by successful entrepreneurs who are Swansea graduates or current students.
