Festival of Research - Unsafe in any bed: Professors explore healthcare IT problems

This public lecture, which is free of charge and open to all, will look at healthcare in our increasingly computer-dominated hospitals. Its title Unsafe in any Bed echoes the title of Ralph Nader’s damning account of the 1960s car industry Unsafe at Any Speed, as the lecture critiques the poor state of Healthcare IT today and offers solutions for the future.

Speakers: Professor Harold Thimbleby, Swansea University, Wales, and Professor Ross Koppel, University of Pennsylvania, USA. The lecture will be chaired by David Ford, Professor of Health Informatics and Director of the Health Information Research Unit for Wales, Swansea University.

In this lecture Professor Koppel will present examples of Healthcare IT and explore why so much of it fails to respond to the needs of clinicians and patients.

‎Professor Thimbleby will then show how many of these problems arise from design failings that remain invisible until it is too late; he will then show how problems can be avoided so patients are safer.Together, Professors Koppel and Thimbleby will debate with the audience on ways to improve healthcare in our increasingly computer-dominated hospitals.

This event forms part of Swansea University’s Festival of Research – a week-long showcase of research excellence, which runs from Monday, February 25 until Friday, March 1, 2013. The event is funded by Swansea University’s Bridging the Gaps research council-funded project (BTG).
