Business leaders gather for new School of Management launch

Business leaders from across south Wales were recently invited to the campus to hear about how the University is strengthening links with business, at an event to mark the launch of the new School of Management.

Private and public sector organisations were represented at the event, along with business groups such as the CBI and South Wales Chamber of Commerce.

School of Management Launch 11.10.13They heard from the head of the new School of Management about his vision for its future, and from the University Vice Chancellor Professor Richard Davies and Paul Byard from the Engineering Employers’ Federation, both of whom stressed the importance of links between the University and business.

With the first buildings on the new Bay campus already taking shape, the University team involved in the project gave the audience an update on developments.    

Professor Nigel Piercy, Dean of the School of Management, said:

“These are exciting times for the School of Management.  We have a bright future ahead of us, with an emphasis on more teaching for students, a more international perspective, and more impact on the wider world.

Swansea can be one of the best university-based business schools offering a full portfolio.  Our strategic goal is to be in the UK top 10.”

One of the delegates was Anton Kossack, a Swansea University graduate, who is now a business analytics manager with Admiral Insurance. 

Anton described how Admiral already links to the University and the School of Management:

“Admiral sponsors a module on the MSc in Finance which has benefits all round.  It gives students exposure to industry, and an opportunity to enhance their skills.  

It also gives Admiral a direct line to clever people, and we’re always looking for good people to take on.  So it’s really good to have links like this between the company and the University.”

University Vice Chancellor Professor Richard B Davies said:

“Swansea University was founded on links with industry, and engagement with our stakeholders in business remains critical.   The new School of Management has a very important part to play in that area.”
