A student from Swansea University has been crowned the winner of a Wales-wide university competition run by Traveline Cymru.
Anna Mathers, a final year Geography and German student, originally from Blackheath in London, was awarded her prize, a brand new iPad HD, by Traveline Cymru Chairman Alan Kreppel.
The competition, which gained nearly 2,000 entries, was launched at the Freshers’ Fayres of Wales’ eight main universities during September. It encouraged students to ‘like’ the Traveline Cymru facebook page and use the mobile applications of the public transport information service when out and about.
Anna, who spent a year abroad in Germany last year, signed up to the competition at the University’s Freshers’ Fayre in September and has since benefited from using Traveline Cymru’s mobile services when travelling around Swansea. Anna said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have won the iPad. Not only will it help me with my studies but it will make it easier for me to plan my journeys as I’m now able to find lots of public transport information using Traveline Cymru’s free apps. Since being introduced to their services in September, I have found them really useful when travelling around the City.”
As well as travel and transport information all year round through facebook and twitter, students can use Traveline Cymru’s free, bilingual app for iphone and android users to plan journeys, check travel alerts, find the nearest bus stop and search for community transport or park and ride information.
There is also the mobile internet site NextBuses.mobi which allows students to access bus times for their nearest bus stop on their smart phones, as well as the Traveline txt service, a simple service allowing bus times to be sent directly to your mobile by texting the unique bus stop code to 84268.
Alan Kreppel, Chairman at Traveline Cymru, said: “Over the past two months, the Traveline Cymru team has travelled the length and breadth of the country visiting Wales’ leading universities to encourage students to use our mobile services.
“When arriving in a new place, it can be hard to find your way around so our mobile services can come in really handy when you’re out and about needing travel information. The number of people using our app grows day by day and a large percentage are in the 18-24 age bracket which proves it’s a hit with students.
“We’re delighted to award Anna with her prize and hope that she will continue to be an ambassador for our travel information services.”
